The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, often shortened to "Baker Institute," is a public policy think tank on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas. Founded in 1993, it has quickly become one of the nation's leading voices in public policy research. It is named in honor of it's Honorary Chair, The Honorable James Addison Baker III, the 61st Secretary of State and 67th Secretary of Treasury. The Baker Institute's founding Director, the Honorable Edward P. Djerejian, is a career diplomat and former American Ambassador to Israel and Syria and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. The Institute's Board of Advisors include Mr. William Barnett, Chair; The Honorable Colin Powell, ex-officio; The Honorable Madeline Albright, ex-officio; and Rice President David Leebron, ex-officio. The Institute seeks out and is home to the leading scholars and researchers in the world. Located in Houston, Texas, the nation's fourth-largest city and a dynamic business and cultural center in the American heartland, the institute brings a unique perspective to the public policy questions of the day. The Baker Institute is an integral part of Rice University, one of the nation's most distinguished institutions of higher education. Rice's faculty and student body play an important role in its research programs and public events. The Institute is located on the Rice campus in James A. Baker III Hall, home not only to the Baker Institute, but also the School of Social Sciences (including the departments of Economics and Political Science). The Institute is strictly non-partisan and dedicated to the highest standards of intellectual excellence and integrity with the goal of helping bridge the gap between the theory and practice of public policy by drawing together experts from academia, government, the media, business, and non-governmental organizations. By so doing, the institute hopes to broaden the professional perspective and personal understanding of all those involved in the study, formulation, execution, and criticism of public policy. The Institute's current research includes the areas of: Arab Media and Politics, Conflict Resolution, Drug Policy, Energy, Health Economics, Homeland Security and Terrorism, International Economics, Religion and Culture, Science & Technology Policy, Space Policy, Tax and Expenditure Policy, The Americas Project (Latin American Policy), Transnational China Project (Chinese Culture and Policy), Urban Studies and U.S. Mexico Project (projects surrounding the issues on the U.S. Border with Mexico). More information on their programs, research and publications is available on their website. The Institute hosts many events with national figures and strives to make them available live on their website via webstreaming technology. The Institute is supported mainly through donor support, including the "Baker Institute Roundtable". For additional information about the Institute, the Contact page provides mail, e-mail and phone information or questions can be sent via the Feedback page.
