Franco was cast as Dean after a casting search that spanned New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other cities.[2] Franco became so immersed in the role that he went from being a non-smoker to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day for the role.[3] He has since quit the habit. Franco also learned to ride a motorcycle, play the guitar, and play the bongos during his preparation for the film.[4] Of his performance Franco remarked "I tried to show how personal James Dean made each of his roles and how the roles so strangely paralleled his real life. He was a very dedicated artist who would sacrifice anything for his work. His emotional life and turmoil drove this tortured man to become something great, and it has been a dream come true to play him."[5] The movie was directed by Mark Rydell who also directed On Golden Pond and The Rose and knew Dean personally.[6] Mark Rydell (born March 23, 1934 in New York City) is an American film director and producer. ...
