James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton (d. 1458) was a grandson of James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton. The marquessate of Douglas and the earldom of Angus, the historic dignities held by the two chief branches of the family, the Black and the Red Douglas, are merged in the Hamilton peerage.
His grandson, the 3rdearl, left daughters only, of whom the eldest, Margaret, married James Hamilton, earl of Arran, regent of Scotland, ancestor of the dukes of Hamilton; Elizabeth married in 1543 JamesDouglas, who became by this marriage 4th earl of Morton.
JamesDouglas, 9th Earl (and last), denounced his brother's murderers and took up arms, but was obliged by the desertion of his allies to submit.
James sought to remain in the favour of the unmarried Queen of England, as he was a potential successor to her Crown; his mother was the granddaughter of Margaret Tudor (Elizabeth I's aunt).
James faced a Roman Catholic uprising in 1588, and was forced to reconcile with the Church of Scotland, at length agreeing to the repeal of the Black Acts in 1592.
James died in 1625 of ague, probably brought upon by kidney failure and stroke, and was buried in the Henry VII Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey.
