During World War I, Harbord worked closely with General Pershing. In 1918, he was given command of the Fourth Marine Brigade which was serving as part of the Army Second Infantry Division. James Guthrie Harbord (March 21, 1866 – August 20, 1947) was a Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army and President and Chairman of the Board of RCA.
Harbord was born in Bloomington, Illinois, and raised in Bushong, Kansas and Manhattan, Kansas.
Harbord was also to report on Turkish-Armenian relations in the wake of the Armenian Genocide.

In May, 1918, Harbord was re-assigned by Pershing to the Marine Brigade of the 2d Infantry Division, and he and his men successfully halted the Germans at Belleau Wood (6-25 June, 1918).
Harbord was promoted major general, and commander of the 2d Division during the counterattacks on Soisson.
After the war, General Harbord was promoted to brigadier general in the Regular Army and again appointed Chief of Staff of the AEF, and on return to the U.S. as major general in 1919, commander of the 2d Infantry Division.
