Sir James Richard Marie Mancham (born 1939) was the first President of Seychelles from 1976 to 1977. He was deposed by his prime minister, France-Albert René. Sir James is also the author of two books, one about the coup called Paradise Raped and a recent book about Seychelles in relation to the War on Terrorism. He leads the Democratic Party but reportedly has little popular support because of what is viewed as an excessively close friendship with René. Under the new constitution, Mancham became the Chief Minister of the colony.
On June 5, 1977, during Mancham's absence at the London Commonwealth Conference, supporters of Prime Minister René overthrew Mancham in a smoothly executed coup and installed René as president.
