Philip James Edwin Peebles (born April 25, 1935) is an Canadian-American astronomer. He is usually known by the name "James" or "Jim".


He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He is currently a professor emeritus at Princeton University.


He won the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1981, the Henry Norris Russell Lectureship in 1993, the Bruce Medal in 1995, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1998 and the Shaw Prize in Astronomy in 2004.
