James Peter Allaire (1785-1858) was a noted master mechanic and steam engine builder. He was born in 1785.
He founded Allaire Works, the first steam engine company in New York City, in 1815, and later Howell Works in 1831, in Wall Township, New Jersey. He built the first compound-type engine for marine use, and built the first building designed as a tenement in New York City.
