Cross had served as a Trade Commissioner in India, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kuala Lumpur before becoming senior Trade Commissioner in Montreal, Quebec.
Cross was abducted at his home in the Westmount area of Montreal on October 5. He was released on December 3 in exchange for safe passage for his abductors to Cuba. They were exiled from Canada for life. Six members of the FLQ's Liberation cell were later convicted of Cross' kidnapping when they returned to Canada over time.
Cross went on to serve as Under-Secretary in various divisions of the British Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Energy. In 1971, he was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.
On October 5, 1970, Cross was abducted from his British diplomatic residence at gunpoint in the Westmount area of Montreal and held as a hostage for two months as the FLQ made a series of demands to the Quebec government.
Cross went on to serve as Under-Secretary in various divisions of the British Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Energy.
RichardJamesCross, M.D. Dr. Cross was the first Chair of Community Medicine, Chair of the Curriculum Committee, and founding Director of the Human Sexuality Program of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Cross directed the Human Sexuality Program from 1972 to 1986, and continued to participate actively in planning and teaching the course until his death at age 87 last year.
Cross was an active member of the Board of the Sex Information and Education Council of the US (SIECUS) and other national organizations.
