Biography

James Wan was born in Kuching, Malaysia and is of Chinese Ethnicity. He was later brought up in Perth, Western Australia from a young age. It was his childhood dream to make films from the age of 11. He followed this dream when he went onto study at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, completing his Bachelor of Arts degree.[1] Kuching is the capital of the East Malaysian State of Sarawak. ...



Before making it big in the film industry he made his first feature film Stygian with Shannon Young which won Best Guerilla Film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival in 2000.[2]


He met Leigh Whannell while in film school, unaware that he would later go on to direct the 2004 horror flick, Saw with the help of Leigh who wrote the script. Wan and Whannell made a short of the film, Saw to showcase the intensity of the script; in which Whannell portrayed the main character of David. They were astounded when film producer, Gregg Hoffman agreed to produce the film that was to become a record breaking horror franchise.[3] The film was financed and developed, later becoming a low-budget sleeper hit in the fall of 2004. Since creating the franchise, Wan has continued to produce sequels, Saw II, Saw III and increased his role as Executive producer for the upcoming film Saw IV. Wan has been busy creating other works with his film school partner Leigh. He knew by the age of 11 that he wanted to be a filmmaker and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, then began making shorts and music videos.
Wan met fellow aspiring filmmaker Leigh Whannell at school, and together they came up with an idea for a horror movie.
Wan and Whannell have since collaborated on a second screenplay -- Dead Silence (2007), starring Donnie Wahlberg, who appeared in Saw II and Saw III.
