O'Sullivan is currently a TD for Limerick East. She was educated at Villiers Secondary School, Limerick, and at Trinity College Dublin. After working as teacher for a short period of time, Jan studied as a Montessori teacher while living in Canada. She chose to spend time at home while having her children and once they were in school she ran a playgroup in the mornings, spent time with the children in the afternoon and political work in the evenings. Political Life Jan entered politics by joining the Democratic Socialist Party in 1982. Jan was elected to Limerick City Council in 1985. She continued as member of the Democratic Socialist Party until the merger with the Labour Party. O'Sullivan served in Seanad Éireann from 1993 until 1997. She was elected to Dáil Éireann for the Limerick East constituency in a 1998 by-election following the death of the sitting TD Jim Kemmy. Jan was subsequently re-elected in the 2002 and 2007 General Elections. Jan is currently the party spokesperson on education.
