Like Daria, Jane too is cynical with biting wit, but is more well adjusted. Her longest relationship so far has been with one Tom Sloane; after they broke up, he started dating Daria, a situation that temporarily caused tension between the girls. Jane planned to lose virginity at 11 pm on her first day of college, which is currently Boston Fine Arts College. In the fictional novel The Daria Diaries, Jane's motto is quoted as being, "Every cloud has a smoky gray lining." Her voice is provided by Wendy Hoopes. Wendy Hoopes is an Malaysian-born, American actor, most widely celebrated for her roles on MTVs animated series Daria, where she provided voices for three different characters (Helen Morgendorffer, Quinn Morgendorffer and Jane Lane). ...
Personal History
Jane's date of birth is considered by avid, unoffical scholars of the series to be July 27, 1983. This theory is based the original airdate of Episode #212 "Pierce Me" (in which Jane has her 17th birthday), which was 27 July, 1998. The year of her birth was calculated by subtracting her age in that particular episode from the year it was aired, taking into account that each season of the series spans over half a year. Jane's age was revealed, along with brother Trent's, in 1998 (before Episdoe #212 aired) as then being 16 when MTV hosted a "Daria Day" marathon, which included specially written segue material for introducing episodes. (For more information on the ages and birthdates of various Lane family members, see essay Jane and the Lanes, posted on Outpost Daria) July 27 is the 208th day (209th in leap years) of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, with 157 days remaining. ...

Early history about Jane's life that was revealed during the show is scarce, but there are a few facts that were confirmed by the character herself. She was, in her prepubescent years, a member of the girl scouts, during which time she was forced to attend a nature camping event, a memory she detests. This was revealed in Episode #402 (Antisocial Climbers). Other camping events Jane has partaken in include Mr O'Neill's overnight fieldtrip to local woodlands (as depicted in Episode #402, Antisocial Climbers) and a summer vacation to the Ashfeild Artist's Colony (as depicted in the Daria telemovie, Is It Fall Yet?). Despite these numerous occasions, Jane remains adament in behavior that she does not enjoy camping in any sense of the word. Jane had her first serious romantic relationship at the age of 17 with Tom Sloane, only son of wealthy local family and then student of Feilding Prepatory Academy. The relationship ended almost one year later when they both realized, amongst a personal controversy of Daria kissing Tom, that it had run its course. Jane and Tom remain casual friends. At the age of 18, Ms. Lane graduated from Lawndale High School and was accepted by Boston Fine Arts College into the midterm freshman class. Because the show ended before Jane actually began attending the college, her current status is ultimately unknown, but it is assumed that she still attends the college, socializing with Daria, who attends a college in the same city, on her free weekends. Whether she achieved her goal of loosing virginity the day she entered college, or not, remains to be known. Note: Information on characters' current ages and birth dates are highly speculative and solid, irrefutable conclusions cannot be drawn. Due to the show's "flexible reality", things such coherent timelines are often unattainable and fundamentally nonexistant, as story and character take constant prioty over historical continuity. The issue is further complicated by the show's inconsistant depiction of time passage: seasons one though to four all spanned over half a year each (in the fictional world established by the show) whereas season five was in itself an entire year. This raises great confusion as to how to convert measures of time in the series to measures of time in existential reality.
Family Jane's parents are Vincent and Amanda Lane, two artistic personalities with a very relaxed, uninvolved approach to parenting. She is the youngest of the Lane family, her older sibling being, in presumed ascending order, Trent, Penny, Wind and Summer Lane. Trent is a perpetually lazy grunge rock musician who performs in garage band Mystik Spiral, Penny a disillusioned backpacker with a fondness for animals, Wind an emotionally damaged divorcee of three instances and Summer a worn out mother of four, including Jane's neice Courney and nephew Adrian. Jane and Trent were the only two Lanes residing in the Lane household for the duration of the series. With Jane at college, it is presumed the Trent is now living alone in the house, but still with a firm loving relationship to sister Jane.
