Janet and Chrissy shared an apartment in Santa Monica, California, and needed a third roommate to pay the rent after their old roommate, Eleanor, moved out. They found Jack Tripper sleeping in their shower after a party they threw. Upon getting to know Jack, who was at the time staying at the local YMCA while in between residences, Janet and Chrissy asked him to be their new roommate. Their landlord, Stanley Roper, was not fond of the idea of a young man sharing an apartment with two young attractive women, especially an apartment that he lived directly underneath! However, Janet, always the clever roommate, came up with the story that Jack was gay to alleviate Stanley's concern about their arrangements. He was allowed to live with them under this guise. Janet stayed in the apartment for the duration of the series. She was portrayed as the stereotypical "brunette" of the clan (opposite Chrissy/Cindy/Terri's "blonde" characters). She was intelligent and feisty, and also somewhat strict. Jack and Larry's ploys and teasing never went too far with Janet, and she would outsmart them on nearly every attempt. Above and beyond all else, however, Janet was a deeply loyal friend, with the best interests of those she cared about at heart (despite occasional misunderstanding). Jack sometimes had designs on Chrissy/Terri, and flirted with Janet less frequently. However, toward the end of the series, there was much speculation as to whether or not Jack and Janet would be wed. Eventually, she wed someone else (Phillip Dawson). |
