To the north of Jinan is the county of Muju, to the south is the county of Jangsu, to the west is the county of Wanju, to the southwest is the county of [[Imshill], and to the north is the county of Geumsan in the province of Chungcheongnam-do.
On the whole, the population of the county is decreasing.
The county is located in between the Noryeong Mountains and the Sobaek Mountains, and 80.22% of it is mountainous.

Jangsu is located at 127°22′~ 127°42′ East, and 35°28′~ 35°49′ North.
To the east are the Sobaek Mountains and the counties of Hamyang and Geochang in Gyeongsangnam-do, to the west are the counties of Jinan and Imshil, to the south is the city of Namwon, and to the north is the county of Muju.
As Jangsu is located in a very rural part of the country, it has a large number of international marriages due to the lack of marriable women in the county for men who live and work there.
