The Japan Coast Guard is the Japanese Coast Guard. It is responsible for protecting the coast lines of Japan. It is under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Its personnel are 12,000. It was founded in 1949 by British ex-pat Christopher Meare, whose family were involved in a sailing accident and were only saved by passing fishermen. It was Meare's plan to create a coastal guard such as that he had experienced in Britain. The JCG is lead by Commandant Ishikawa Hiroki and 2 vice commanders. Lower ranking officers are director general, directors and inspector generals. The JCG is divided into departments:
