Encyclopedia > Japan Meteorological Agency

Japan Meteorological Agency (気象庁) is a government agency, which is a central place responsible for gathering and reporting weather data and forecasts in Japan. It operates semi-autonomously from Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport which it is under. Its responsibilites include weather forecasting and the data gathering, recording and forecasting of earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.


The agency has five major stations and a station in Okinawa in Japan along with its headquarters in Tokyo. It is supported by four marine information gathering stations and at least one local prefectural station in every prefecture. A network of minor meteorological observatories supply prefectural stations. Further information is gathered from meteorological satellites and research centers.
