The Japanese Red Cross Society (日本赤十字社 nihon sekijūji sha) is a humanitarian corporation established by the Japanese Red Cross Law of 1952. The Imperial Family of Japan traditionally has supported the Red Cross society, with Empress as Honorary President and other royal family members as Vice-Presidents. Its headquarters is located in Tokyo and local chapters are set up in all 47 prefectures. 15,530,000 individual and 220,000 corporate members join the society. The society operates 92 Red Cross Hospitals and 79 Blood Centers all over the country, and conducts relief activities when major disasters take place. Big earthquakes which frequently occur in Japan are an area of work for the society. The Japanese experienced great earthquakes at Tokyo in 1923, at Kobe in 1995, and at Niigata in 2004. History
Count Sano Tsunetami founded the Philanthropic Society (Hakuaisha) to rescue the injured, when a major civil war called the Southwestern War (Seinan Sensou) took place in 1877. The Society was changed into the Japanese Red Cross in 1887. The Japanese royal family, especially Empress Shoken, actively supported the Red Cross activities, as many Western royal families at that time. During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the Japanese Red Cross played an outstanding role to rescue many Russian prisoners of war. German prisoners of war, captured by the Imperial Japanese Army at their Chinese colony of Qingdao, were treated fairly well with the help of the Red Cross during WWI. After all, Japan was allied with Great Britain under the Anglo-Japanese alliance treaty in those days. Even in 1934, the Japanese society hosted the 15th International Conference of the Red Cross at Tokyo. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), the Japanese army tended to ignore the Geneva Convention. Hundreds of thousands of Europeans, both military and civilian, were interned into camps, when the Japanese army occupied Southeast Asia in 1942. The Japanese Red Cross played little to rescue them. After WWII, the new Japanese Red Cross was formed under American advisers. 1877 was a common year starting on Monday (see link for calendar). ...
