North America

Japantowns were created because of the widespread immigration of Japanese to America in the Meiji period. At that time, many Japanese were poor and did not have much money. Because of that they thought they would have a better life in the USA. Slowly they began to make small towns all across the US and some parts of Canada. The Meiji period ) denotes the 45-year reign of Emperor Meiji, running from 8 September 1868 (in the Gregorian calendar, 23 October 1868) to 30 July 1912. ...


There are currently three Japantowns left in the United States, which are facing issues such as commercialization, reconstruction, and dwindling Japanese populations. [1]

Outside North America

  • Liberdade is the Japanese district in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, after the United States and Canada.
  • Düsseldorf (especially the district Oberkassel) has the largest Japanese population in Germany (and Europe). It has the biggest Buddhist temple of Europe as well. The towns surrounding Düsseldorf (e.g. Meerbusch in the west of Düsseldorf) have significant Japanese population as well.
  • London has a Japanese community in Leicester Square
  • In Bangkok a Japanese population lives in and around Sukhumvit Road, and Phrompong. Many of the apartment complexes are rented solely to Japanese people (although they may be owns by Thais), and there are Japanese grocery shops, restaurants, bars, dry cleaning, clubs, etc. in and around Phrompong.

San Francisco's Japantown (1465 words)
Japantown first sprung up with the original influx of Japanese immigrants in the mid-1800s.
The locale suffered a further indignity during the fifties, when scores of old Victorian residences, housing hundreds of residents, were torn down to widen Geary Boulevard in the name of ill-advised "redevelopment".
Japantown is one of the city's smaller districts, so it should take no longer than two or three hours to stroll through the locale in its entirety.
San Francisco's JapanTown (468 words)
Today's JapanTown was formed after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and fire and occupies an area of the Filmore district that is roughly within the confines of California Street to the north, O'Farrell Street to the south, Fillmore to the west and Laguna to the east.
JapanTown was also negatively impacted by redevelopment in the 1950's with the widening of Geary Boulevard and the destruction of dozens of Victorians to make room for both the boulevard and the Japan Center Mall.
The Japan Center — with its Peace Plaza and five-story Pagoda is the dominate architectural structure in JapanTown.
