Jared Irwin Whitaker (May 4, 1818 – May 3, 1884) was the mayor of Atlanta, Georgia after a contentious election defeating William Ezzard, he didn't finish his term as mayor being appointed Commissary-General of Georgia's Civil War troops. He was succeeded by Thomas Lowe on December 13, 1861. Starting in 1864 he published Atlanta newspaper, The Daily Intelligencer and employed John H. Steele as editor. The newspaper was closed down in April of 1871 not able to compete with the Atlanta Constitution which bought all of its mechanical equipment in June of that year. He is buried in Oakland Cemetery.
