Javier Echevarria Rodriguez, a Roman Catholic prelate, was born in Madrid on June 14, 1932. He was ordained to the presbyterate for Opus Dei on August 7, 1955. With the death of the first Prelate of Opus Dei, Msgr. Alvaro del Portillo on March 23, 1994, a period of mourning followed. The Holy See subsequently named Father Echevarria Rodriguez as the second Prelate of Opus Dei on April 20, 1994, and Titular Bishop of Cilibia on November 21, 1994. Javier Echevarria Rodriguez also criticized masses that have an excessive number of priests celebrating together, saying it can confuse the faithful and diminish the link between the priest and the altar.
Echevarria said he asked himself whether such large masses were being celebrated correctly, and said the former Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, had expressed a similar question in his book Look at the Crucifix.
Echevarria's comments were delivered on the fourth working day of the synod, which is designed to let bishops from around the world voice concerns about the eucharist and make recommendations to the Pope.
