All About Jean Plaidy (3202 words)
Jean Plaidy is also well-known for the Gothic romances she wrote under the name ‘Victoria Holt’ and her massive ‘Daughters of England’ saga, spanning more than four centuries, for which she used the pseudonym ‘Philippa Carr’.
Beyond the Blue Mountains (1958) is an untypical Plaidy title, a rousing 'blockbuster' chronicling the lives of three generations of women, beginning in the mid-eighteenth century with the ordeals of young Kitty Kennedy and her illegitimate daughter as they go from Newgate Jail to the prison colonies of Australia.
It is an astonishing achievement to satisfy her legions of fans, Plaidy had, since 1952, produced two novels a year, but in 1981 and ‘82 she had raised her output to three books a year in order to finish her great work.
