Encyclopedia > Jeanne of Navarre

Jeanne (or Joan or Johanna) of Navarre (c.1271- April 4, 1305), Queen Consort of France, was the daughter of Henry III of Champagne and Blanche of Artois. She was possibly also descended from Blanche of Castille. In 1274, upon the death of her father, she became Countess of Champagne and Queen of Navarre.


At the age of 13, Jeanne married Philippe IV of France on August 16, 1284, becoming Queen a year later. Their children were:

  1. Marguerite (b. 1286/88)
  2. Louis X 'le Hutin' - (October 4, 1289 - June 5, 1316)
  3. Isabelle - (1292 - August 23, 1358) who married Edward II of England
  4. Philippe V 'le Long' - (1293 - January 3, 1322)
  5. Blanche de France - (b. abt 1291)
  6. Isabelle de France - (b. abt 1292)
  7. Charles IV 'le Bel' - (1294 - February 1, 1328)
  8. Robert (1297-1308)


Their three eldest sons would become Kings of France and their younger daughter Queen of England.

Jeanne was born in Pau in 1528, the daughter of Henry II of Navarre and Marguerite of Navarre.
In 1555 Henry II of Navarre died, and Jeanne and her husband became rulers of Navarre.
