GOAL Sudan started emergency humanitarian operations in the Jebel Marra Region of West Darfur in July 2004.
The program was designed to provide nutrition, health, road construction and food security assistance to the local population.
In addition to that, in March 2005 GOAL Sudan conducted a post-harvest Food Security and nutrition survey and the findings of this survey showed that 90% of the JebalMarra communities can not cover 60% of their basic food needs.
It is largely an arid plateau with the Marrah Mountains (Jebel Marra), a range of volcanic peaks rising up to 3,000 m (10,100 ft), in the center of the region.
The one exception is the area in and around the JebalMarra mountains.
The Daju, inhabitants of Jebel Marra, appear to have been the dominant group in Darfur in the earliest period recorded.
