Olson was born in New York City, but currently lives in Connecticut. He joined the Village People in 1980 when Randy Jones left, and a friend informed him that a pop-group was looking for a singer/dancer. Before that he had been the owner of a bar in Los Angeles. Today, he is on the board of directors for Sixuvus Ltd., the company formed out of Village People.
