Jefferson High School was created from a consolidation of three high schools in Jefferson County: Charles Town High School, Harpers Ferry High School, and Shepherdstown High School, all three of which are now middle schools. Its placement in Shenandoah Junction was chosen because it was a central and neutral location among the three former high school districts. Construction has begun on a second high school near the Huntfield development in Charles Town recently named Washington High School. In addition, the Jefferson High School 9th Grade Complex will become Wildwood Middle School with the completion of the new Washington High School. Jefferson's biggest rival is Martinsburg High School, who they compete against in all sporting events. Jefferson has won 9 State Baseball Championships under High School Hall of Fame Coach John Lowery. The Jefferson Girls soccer team competed in the WV State High School soccer semifinals in the fall of 2006, losing to eventual state champions Parkersburg. But that season the varsity squad only lost 1 game besides the semifinals. In 2007 the varsity team won the state tournament for the first time in school history. The JV team has gone undefeated 3 years in a row starting in 2005-2007. The Jefferson High Lady Cougars won the WVSSAC State Championship in soccer beating Parkersburg in a 2-1 victory in 2007.
Band and Color Guard Jefferon County's Cougar Marching Band is currently run by the director, Mr. Showen, along with his assistant band directors Ms. Barb and Mrs. Elliot. The band and color gaurd have participated in numerous events throughout the past years, including football games, parades, and competitions. Even though they participate in competitions, they have not competed in TOB in the past few years and tend to be more of an exhibition band.
