After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) with a B.A. in Theater, he went on to study at New York University, from which he earned an Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in acting. Prior to attending UMass Amherst, Donovan studied at Bridgewater State College, also in Massachusetts.
