Before turning to films,Weintraub's largest entertainment success was as the personal manager of singer/actor John Denver, whom he signed in 1970.By 1975,the combination of Denver's talent & Weintraub's brilliant PR skills had made the blond-haired troubadour the highest-selling male artist in the world. The two split acrimonously in 1982,when Denver felt neglected by Weintraub who was working on The Karate Kid at the time. This acrimony has resulted in Weintraub being largely airbrushed from (or distancing himself, depending on who you talk to) the Denver success story. While the tele-pic The John Denver Story(2000) incorrectly suggests his business manager Hal Thau was instrumental in Denver's success,it was Weintraub, with his insistence that Denver appear on television("I knew the critics would never go for him,so I had to get him to the people"he told Maureen Orth of Newsweek in 1976) that turned Denver,as Weintraub recalled from "a $65 a night folksinger to the biggest star in the world". Details of the split(from Denver's point of view) can be found in the singer's autobiography'Take Me Home.' In it,the singer gives some interesting insights in Weintraub's personality, variously describing him as Tom Parker-type of boundless confidence(who at one time liked to call Denver"my best friend in the whole world")to an egomaniac of dubious integrity who liked to always have a finger in every pie.So far Weintraub has remained silent re the accuracy of this depiction.
