The Jewish Relief Agency is an organization whose aim is to identify and feed needy Jewish families. JRA has done so by compiling one of the largest databases of Jews requesting food assistance in the Greater Philadelphia region. Our monthly distributions reach out to over 1600 families. Though it may come as a surprise to many, there are roughly 57,000 Jews in Greater Philadelphia who are living in poor or lower-income households - that's nearly a quarter of the Jewish population in the five-county area. Some of these families are receiving support from the established Jewish agencies, but many are not. Many of the hungry and needy are recent immigrants from Russia whose difficulties with language and lack of familiarity with the established agency structure have left them outside of the existing net of Jewish aid. Others have been here for some time and have simply fallen through the gaps. Still others receive now and again, but it is hardly enough. Started in September, 2000 with three volunteers serving 19 families, the Jewish Relief Agency has grown to be vibrant volunteer-driven organization. More than 3,500 volunteers have participated in bringing food and a warm smile to 1,600 low-income Jewish families. JRA's unique approach includes a monthly door-to-door distribution of food staples including canned fruits, salmon, soups and pasta. This delivery strategy has proven particularly helpful to those restricted to their homes and those with limited means of transportation. In addition to the benefit for our recipients, JRA's growing network of distribution volunteers - approximately 400 people of all ages participate each month - have found this approach richly rewarding.
How the Food Distributions Work Distributions take place one Sunday each month at our warehouse in Northeast Philadelphia (located at 9986 Gantry Road just off Red Lion Road). From 10:00 until 11:30 volunteers package food into boxes and bags. Then, volunteers load their cars and distribute the food packages to families according to pre-determined delivery routes, complete with driving directions and maps. Volunteers then stop back at the warehouse to return the distribution route, feedback and any undeliverable boxes. If you plan to join us at a distribution, please let us know that you will be coming. We need to know how many people are coming ahead of time so that the delivery routes may be planned accurately. Donation Info JRA is looking for financial support in order to enable us to feed more families. A donation of $25 lets JRA feed one family for a month; a $300 gift covers the costs of that family for an entire year. For some of our recipients, the food goods that we are supplying monthly may be the difference between eating regularly and deciding which meals to skip on any given day. Please help us to make sure that no Jewish family in Philadelphia is forced to make that decision. Tax deductible contributions may be made to "Jewish Relief Agency" and mailed to: The Jewish Relief Agency 125 Montgomery Ave. Suite A3 Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 You may specify whether your donation is in memory or in honor of someone. Upon receipt of your contribution we will send you an acknowledgement. Donate Online (https://www.charitybox.com/JRA/Default.asp) |
