A 6'11" forward/center, Chones starred at Marquette University, where he earned All-America honors in 1972 after averaging 20.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. He left school at the end of that season to pursue a professional career, first in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and later in the National Basketball Association. He was a member of the New York Nets (1972–1973), Carolina Cougars (1973–1974), Cleveland Cavaliers, (1974–1979), Los Angeles Lakers (1979–1981), and Washington Bullets (1981–1982).
