Jim Marurai has been the prime minister of the Cook Islands since December 14, 2004 when he was elected by Parliament by a vote of 14-9. He is a member of the Democratic Alliance Party, the same party as his predecessor, Robert Woonton. Marurai was previously the minister of education. Shortly after being voted in by Parliament as prime minister, JimMarurai 57, was formally sworn-in by the Queens Representative as the eighth prime minister of the Cook Islands.
