Jim Shea, Jr. won the gold medal in the sport of skeleton at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. He was born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut and moved to Lake Placid, New York in his late teens.
Shea is a third-generation Olympian; his father Jim Sr., competed in nordic-combined at the 1964 games and grandfather Jack Shea won two gold medals in speedskating at the 1932 Olympics, which were held in Lake Placid. Like his grandfather, Shea, Jr. also recited the athlete's oath at the opening ceremonies.
Jim's father, James, participated in cross country skiing and in nordic combined at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics.
Jim himself began as a bobsledder and then switched to skeleton because it was less expensive and more exciting.
Shea recorded the fastest time of the first run and then held on in the second run to defeat Martin Rettl for the gold medal by five hundredths of a second.
