Bartel was selected with the 8th Pick in the 2001 AFL Draft by the Geelong Football Club, having been recruited from the Geelong Falcons TAC Cup team where he was selected in both the Under-18 All-Australian Team, and the TAC Cup Team of the Year for 2000 and 2001. He helped the team win the 2000 TAC Cup Grand Final, and won the team's Best and Fairest award. In 2005, Bartel was nominated by the Australian Football League Player's Association for the Robert Rose Award, awarded to the player deemed by his peers to be the most courageous in the league.

Bartel's 2007 season was spectacular. He averaged over 27 disposals per game, finishing amongst the top 5 within the league for total disposals even though he missed a few games. On the 24th of September won the 2007 Brownlow Medal with 29 votes, the highest amount of votes ever by a Geelong medalist and the third highest ever scored by a player under the 3-2-1 polling system. He won the medal despite missing the last two matches of the season after having his appendix removed.
