The Jingda Expressway is formed mainly by the main trunk route from Beijing to Datong in three stages. Leaving Beijing, the Jingda Expressway becomes the Badaling Expressway. After Kangzhuang in Yanqing County, it becomes the Jingzhang Expressway. Finally, it becomes the Xuanda Expressway.
As of September 2004, traffic has been clogging up more and more in the area. Due to the massive transportation of coal, what was a very smooth route in the summer is now clogged up with immense traffic jams.
It forms part of the JingdaExpressway from central Beijing through to Datong in Shanxi province.
With the traffic situation as it is, and with the onslaught of more traffic, work on the expressway started in 1998, culminating in the completion of the entire expressway on November 16, 2002.
The Jingzhang Expressway runs within Hebei province, although the very beginning of the expressway is in Beijing municipality.
The expressway starts from Liuliqiao on the southwestern 3rd Ring Road, passes through the 4th Ring Road at Yuegezhuang, and then approaches a heavily industrialised area, the Xidaokou area near Shougang.
Claimed as the first completed expressway in mainland China, construction began in April of 1986 and was completed in segments, culminating eventually in November of 1993, although the Beijing section was opened around the start of the 1990s.
In early February 2004, a traffic accident occurred when a lorry driver, who was in the middle of repairing a tyre, was literally thrown into the middle of the road, as a result of a huge jet of air which came from the tyre change.
