João Café Filho (February 3, 1899 - February 20, 1970). Brazilian politician. Born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte state, Café Filho was a journalist and federal deputy. Elected vice-president in 1950, under Getúlio Dornelles Vargas. Following the Vargas suicide in 1954, Café Filho assumed the presidency. Two months before the end of his term (which would expire in January 31, 1956), he left the head of government due poor health. Trying to back to his post, he was prevented to resume his duties by the Congress and militars, due to suspections that Café Filho would not allow the president-elect Juscelino Kubitschek to take oath.
