In January 1990 a mysterious old man was seen lingering around Albert Square. He seemed to know the area well and although he was initially reluctant to divulge his identity, it was apparant that he knew some of the older residents too, in particular the Beale family and the Watts family. Café worker Rod Norman and his girlfriend Hazel took an interest in the man, whose name was later revealed to be Harry Osborne. They discovered that he had travelled the world before his recent return to Walford. Hazel — spurred on by Harry's tales — left Rod to do some traveling of her own. Harry was seen regularly over the following weeks, mysteriously enquiring about old faces on the Square and cryptically turning up at the christening of Steven Beale, much to the bemusement of everyone else. Rod found out that he had once been the boyfriend of Lou Beale's sister, Doris. Lou had died in 1988, but Harry was persuaded to pay her daughter Pauline a visit to find out about Doris. He knocked on her door, but fearfully fled before she answered. It soon became clear that Harry's past wasn't the only thing troubling him, he was also suffering from ill health and was seen clutching his chest in obvious pain. One cold, rainy afternoon, Harry sat in pain on a bench in Albert Square gardens, where he died. His body was found by Willy, Ethel Skinner's dog. Ethel recognised Harry and seemed to know a lot about his history. When Harry returned he managed to find employment working on the docks, where he occasionally got his hands on scarce food items, which he smuggled out and shared with his neighbours. On one occasion he gave some meat to a nine year old girl. However the meat turned out to be unsanitary and it accidentally poinsoned her. She died and Harry fled the country in shame amidst accusations of murder. He had spent over 40 years in self-imposed exile and it seemed that Harry had only come back to his childhood home to die.[1] Harry's death upset Rod and he left Walford soon after to travel the world.

When Joan's mother started to suffer from dementia in 1990, she came to Walford to assess the situation. She and her brother Frank had not spoken for many years, but they were forced to call a truce for their mother's sake. Soon after, Frank took a confused Mo on an excursion to visit Joan in Colchester. She began demanding to move to her daughter's because she feared Frank wanted to kill her, but in a moments of lucidity, she pleaded with her son to do just that. Frank could not cope with his mother's illness, and when he began talking about ending her misery for her, Joan decided that Mo should not remain living with him. She and her husband took Mo to live with them in Colchester, where she died in 1992.

When Snip and his friends refused to vacate the pub after closing time one evening, Clyde threatened to quit his job unless they left. They didn't, so Clyde quit but he contacted his boss, Sharon Mitchell, who was holidaying in America. Sharon returned to find that many of her regulars were refusing to drink at The Vic, mainly because of Snip. She took control and barred Grant's friends, causing him much humiliation, and he ended up hitting her.

Audrey Whittingham kidnapped Vicki Fowler while she waited to be collected outside Walford Primary School. A massive police investigation was launched. Michelle became very emotional and protective over Vicki for a while after, refusing to let her outside or attend school. She thought she saw glimpses of Audrey everywhere she went, which everyone told her was impossible, as Audrey was locked away in prison. However, Michelle wasn't being paranoid as Audrey turned up on her doorstep shortly after hoping to explain her actions. She had endured a series of tragedies, starting with the death of her baby daughter many years earlier, and later in life the death of one of her sons and her husband. Her other son lived abroad and she had become lonely and desperate. She began to wonder what her daughter would have turned out like and when she saw Vicki alone she decided to take her, although she claimed that she intended to bring her back eventually. Michelle was furious and could not forgive Audrey for the trauma she'd put her and Vicki through.

Elizabeth Willmott-Brown (née Bassett) was the wife of rapist, James Willmott-Brown. One of James' victims, Kathy Beale, began to have a recurring nightmare about her rape in 1994. Her boyfriend, Phil Mitchell, decided to go in search of James to scare him away. He traced him to Elizabeth's home, but she told him that James was not in and she was unsure when he would be back. Phil wouldn't give up however, and when Elizabeth left her house many hours later, he demanded that she tell him where James was because he had raped his girlfriend. Elizabeth then got angry and told Phil she was well aware that James was a rapist, but she was trying to protect her two children from it. She also revealed that James had been imprisoned for the rape of another woman.
