Boston.com / Sports / Baseball / Red Sox / Maddon is a player in this (1400 words)
Joe Maddon is not your man if you want a manager who can stand up in a clubhouse and draw on his own experiences as a big-league player when he makes demands of his team.
Maddon works as bench coach for Mike Scioscia, who in 2002 was honored as the American League's Manager of the Year after guiding the Angels to a World Series title but before that won a World Series ring as the heart-and-soul catcher of the 1988 Dodgers.
Maddon, 49, said yesterday he suspects that may be the primary reason he never has interviewed for a big-league managing job outside of the Angels, the only organization for which he has worked.
Willing His Way To The Top :: Former Lafayette two-sport student-athlete Joe Maddon chased his dream from College Hill ... (1383 words)
Maddon is a strong believer that determination and hard work always topple superior talent, and with the help of then Lafayette baseball skipper Norm Gigon, he began to slowly chip away the seemingly impenetrable Major League Baseball inner circle.
Maddon realized Gigon's genius when he was learning and teaching what his former manager taught him at the major league level.
Maddon was rightfully paid the respect he deserves, and the Angels celebrated their first World Series title in 2002, something they could not have done without him.
