In his personal life, Joey has several relationships with various people throughout the series, but none of them turn out to be very serious. In addition, we also learn about his family especially his father who was in the armed forces and was a very domineering and serious person. Joey never had a very good relationship with his father mainly due to his career and his goals, but they eventually reconcile. Joey also has a big interest in cartoons, toys, and other things traditionally marketed to children. He can sometimes be seen wearing pajamas and slippers with a character of a children's show on it. He also enjoys Michigan hockey, as a Detroit Red Wings jersey or t-shirt is commonly seen during the series as well as at least one appearance of a University of Michigan hockey jersey (episode Granny Tanny). A further look, however, shows Joey to be quite multi-talented. He has a pilot's license and can fly a two-seater, out of which Jesse skydives the day of his wedding. Also on Wake Up, San Francisco he answers a question about cartoon violence with professorial mastery. It's also later revealed that he has a teaching license as he substitutes for Michelle's class a few times. The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, Michigan. ...

Along with his comical side, Joey can also give quite good advice at times. There are also times he tries too hard in serious situations such as when he once became so fierce in preparing for a hockey game that he scared Michelle. Also, on several occasions, he overdid the comedy part of his work with Jesse in an ad agency. It is the warm, sensitive, occasionally naïve Joey that the family loves. Joey also expresses how grateful he is to live with the Tanner's because he was an only child and wished to be part of The Brady Bunch. The Tanner family for the most part enjoys Joey's child-like behavior including Jesse, the tough guy who at times cannot stand Joey's comedy but feels like Joey is a brother. Their relationship is best described as the rocker rebel older brother and the comedic immature little brother, even though Joey is 6 years older than Jesse. The Brady Bunch is an American television situation comedy, based around a large blended family. ...
Trivia - His catchphrase, used mainly in his stand-up act, is "Cut-It-Out!", accompanied by hand gestures. This is also Dave Coulier's real-life catchphrase.
- When he first moved into the Tanner house, he lived in the alcove in the living room before moving to the renovated bedroom in the garage and then into Jesse's old room upstairs.
