A pair of Johan Micoud goals lifted Werder Bremen to their first Champions League Group C win over 10-man Udinese at the Weserstadion.
Bremen, the Bundesliga winners in 2004 who were looking to establish themselves in Europe, gave their chances of advancing to the next stage a shot in the arm with a well-earned victory despite a nervous period early in the second half which saw them concede three goals.
Micoud's hit the third just after the interval, however, Antonio Di Natale hit the back of the net twice for Udinese and an own goal by Christian Schulz allowed the visitors to draw level.
