Johann Baptist von Spix (February 9, 1781 - March 14, 1826) was a German naturalist.


Spix was born in Höchstadt. In 1817 he travelled to Brazil with Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, returning in 1820 with specimens of 6,500 plants, 2,700 insects, 85 mammals, 350 birds, 150 amphibians and 116 fish. These formed the basis of the collection of the Natural History Museum in Munich.


Spix died in Munich.

Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix schloss sich 1817 der österreichischen Brasilien-Expedition an, bereiste dann aber mit dem jüngeren Botaniker alleine Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius bis 1820 von Rio de Janeiro das Innere Brasiliens bis Goiás und Rio São Francisco.
Nach ihrer Rückkehr schrieb Spix das Werk "Reise nach Brasilien", das von Martius fortgesetzt wurde und zwischen 1823 und 1831 in drei Bänden erschien.
Beispielsweise setzte Louis Agassiz die von Spix begonnene Klassifizierung der von ihm gefundenen Süßwasserfische Brasiliens fort und fand auf diese Weise zu einem seiner wichtigsten Forschungsgebiete, der Ichthyologie.
