Young was acting Chairman of the Novell Board of Directors from August 1996 until April 1997. John A. Young succeeded William Hewlett as president of Hewlett-Packard in 1977, and as chief executive officer in 1978. In 1992, he retired from his position as CEO of Hewlett-Packard, a position he held for fifteen years. He has had a long association with competitiveness issues, having chaired President Reagan's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness and founded the Council on Competitiveness in 1986. Young is also a director of Affymetrix, Chevron Corporation, International Integration, Inc., Lucent Technology, Smith Kline Beecham plc, and Wells Fargo & Co., and is a member of The Business Council.
