Joseph Butler [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy] (2712 words)
Butler's famous encounter with John Wesley has only recently be reconstructed in as full detail as seems possible given the state of the surviving evidence, and we are now left with little hope of ever knowing what their actual relationship was.
Butler tried to show, as a refutation of the practice of his day (as he perceived it) that morals and religion are natural extensions of the common way of life usually taken for granted, and thus that those who would dispense with them bear a burden of proof they are unable to discharge.
Butler does sometimes refer to the conscience as the voice of God, but contrary to what is sometimes alleged, he never relies on divine authority in asserting the supremacy, the universality or the reliability of conscience.
Birdwatching in Andalucia - a profile of John Butler (1043 words)
But John's lifelong interest in birding and his disciplined approach to the subject have built a formidable level of expertise which is hard to rival in his field.
Butler even knew one spot where the Nightingales did not bother to hide in the shade...and when he conjured up a Mustachioed Warbler, I knew we were in the presence of a master birder.
But John was superb, he found me quite a lot in the day but he is so quick and sure and he knows the birds so well he can give you the specific markings or actions that enabled me to spot them so easily and confidently.
