John B. S. Coats or JBS Coats (* 8. July 1906 in Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scottland; † 26. In 1932 he became a member of the T.S. in London. There he met Alice Bailey, C. Jinarajadasa, Rukmini Devi Arundale and George Arundale. In 1973 he became president of the T.S. Adyar.

Professor John Henry Coates, FRS (born January 26, 1945) is a mathematician who holds (since 1986) the position of Sadleirian Professor (of pure mathematics) at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
Coates was born in New South Wales, Australia, and studied at the Australian National University from which he gained a B.Sc.
In 1969, Coates was appointed assistant professor of mathematics at Harvard University in the United States, before moving again in 1972 to Stanford University where he became an associate professor.

As John Coates was growing up in Centerville, the walls of his room were decorated in pictures of the planets, his mother recalls.
Coates' pin was flown on Space Shuttle Mission 100, a mission by the Shuttle Endeavor in April-May 2001.
John Coates has a Silver Snoopy medal which was awarded to him by NASA for his outstanding contributions to manned space flight.
