Sir John Cope (1690 - 1760) was a British general. He was in command of the government forces at the Battle of Prestonpans, and was defeated by the Jacobite Pretender there in 1745. He is remembered in Scotland for having fled the battlefield before his forces were finally defeated and for travelling so rapidly that he was able to bring news of his own defeat to his Commanding Officer in England.
