Biography

He is the son of John "Towser" Gosden, who died in 1967. He studied economics in Cambridge University. After graduation, he went to Venezuela to work in land management. He later returned to England to become an assistant for Noel Murless. After Noel retired, John went to Ireland to become an assistant to Vincent O'Brien, and later, became the assistant to Tommy Doyle in California. He currently lives in Newmarket, England, and is married to Rachel Hood. He has four children. Horse racing career

Attained an American Horse Training license in 1979. In 1983 he trained Bates Motel, a Handicap Horse, and in 1984, he trained Royal Heroine, a turf mare. Both won the Eclipse Award, and Royal Heroine won the inaugural Breeder's Cup Mile in 1984. In 1988, he moved back to Newmarket, England, and trained horses at Stanley House Stables. In 1996, he won a British Classic when his horse, Shantou, won the St. Leger Stakes. In 1997, another of his horses, Benny the Dip, won the Epsom Derby. Near the end of 1999, he accepted Robert Sangster's offer for him to work at the Manton Complex. In 2000, another of his horses, Lahan, won the One Thousand Guineas Stakes. In late 2005, he moved back to Newmarket to work at Clarehaven, where he trained Nannina, who won the 2005 Fillies' Mile and the 2006 Coronation Stakes. Racing: Gosden to train at Manton (588 words)
They first met when Gosden was assistant to Vincent O'Brien during the glory days at Ballydoyle, and Sangster was among the first owners to send him horses when the young trainer set up in the United States.
Gosden returned to these shores in 1989 as personal trainer to Sheikh Mohammed and he has sent out 900 winners, including 96 Group-race successes from Stanley House, in Newmarket.
However, the links between Gosden and Sheikh Mohammed remain strong and he will be training a significant number of two-year-olds at Manton for the world's leading owner in 2000.

The Italian jockey had been earmarked for the ride, but the Godolphin team who retain him claimed the rider for one of their mounts, and Willie Ryan was granted the shot at glory.
Gosden has long appreciated the magic of Derby Day - he was assistant to legendary Irish trainer Vincent O'Brien when he sent out Lester Piggott for victory on The Minstrel in 1977.
Summerland has been well beaten in his two trials, although Gosden is the first to admit his horses will improve as the season progresses.
