Encyclopedia > John Kelly

John Kelly (b. 1931) was a senior Irish politician. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann on his second attempt in 1973 as a Fine Gael TD. He retained his seat until his retirement from politics at the 1989 General Election. He served in the first Cabinet under Garret FitzGerald from 1981 until 1982.

John Kelly, father of Ned Kelly was baptised on 20th February 1820 in Moyglass Church in the Parish of Killenaule in the county of Tipperary Ireland
John Kelly was buried in an unmarked grave in Avenel Cemetery, Victoria, on 29th December 1866, far from his native home of Clonbrogan in the heart of County Tipperary.
John Kelly, Ned’s father, came from Moyglass and was transported in 1841 to Van Diemens Land for the stealing of two pigs, and it was this local connection that prompted the format of the whole evening.
