John Loomis Chamberlain was an American army officer, born in New York in 1858. He graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1880. He entered the army as a second-lieutenant and continued in the military service until his retirement in 1921 as a major-general. The campaigns and conflicts of which he was a part include the Spanish-American War 1898-99; the fighting with the Sioux Indians1900-01; the struggle against the Moros of the Philippines in 1903; and World War I, inspecting the American Expeditionary Forces in France in 1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for "exceptional meritorious service'".
