Encyclopedia > John Page (Virginia)

John Page (born 17 April 1744 in Gloucester County, Virginia; died 11 October 1808) was a figure in early United States history. He was a friend of Thomas Jefferson, having exchanged a great deal of correspondence. He also served during the American Revolutionary War as an officer in the Virginia state militia, supplementing it with personal funds. He also participated in framing Virginia's state constitution, as well as serving as a congressional representative of that state from 1789 to 1797, eventually becoming governor from 1802 to 1805.

He was quoted in George W. Bush's inaugural address in 2001: "We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?"
