Design and Construction

The John Paul Jones Arena is in a U shape with the top closed. The western end (the curved section) will be the main entrance and ticket sales office. The locker rooms, sports medicine facility and event support will be located on the first floor, the "event level." Access to suites and lower level seating, concessions, bathrooms and VIP lounges will be located on the second floor, the "lower concourse." Access to higher level seating, concessions, bathrooms and the ticket office will be located on the third floor, the "upper concourse."

The arena features a custom designed steel roof support structure. The pieces were manufactured in San Angelo, Texas and shipped by trucks to the site. Some pieces were so large and heavy, it took two large cranes to hoist them in place. The arena is being outfitted with the latest in lighting and audio/video technologies. San Angelo is a city located in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. ...

A 900 car parking garage is also being constructed next to the arena, mainly for VIP and donor parking. A double story pedestrian walkway links the arena to the parking garage. A separate mechanical plant is part of the parking lot structure and will provide the heating and cooling functions.

The arena is designed by VMDO Architects and Ellerbe Becket. The general contractor is Barton Mallow which oversees the more than 20 subcontractors working on the job. Work began in April of 2003, which included the demolition of a parking lot that served University Hall. The arena celebrated its topping off on 22 June 2005. It is no longer projected to be on time, with the estimates now putting completion at some time in June or July 2006. Most of the arena was given its certificate of occupancy on 16 June 2006, with the locker rooms, practice courts and the sports medicine faclity still awaiting inspection.
