Johnny Craig is an American illustrator who was born in Pleasantville, New York, in 1926. He studied at the Art Students League and worked as an assistant editor to Harry Lambert around 1940. After working as an assistant to Sheldon Mayer, World War II beckoned, and from 1943 to 1945, he did a stint in the Merchant Marines and served in the Army, returning to comics after his discharge. At EC Comics he drew for Moon Girl and other EC Pre-Trend titles from 1947 to 1949. Entertaining Comics was headed by William Gaines but is better known by its publishing name of EC Comics. ...
His clean, crisp realistic approach on EC's The Vault of Horror immediately attracted the attention of comic book readers in 1950. His crime and horror stories were a key factor in the success of EC's New Trend titles. He drew almost all of the Vault-Keeper's tales over a five-year period, scripted many of his own stories and became the editor of The Vault of Horror in 1954. He also edited EC's Extra! in 1955. After the collapse of EC, he worked in advertising in Pennsylvania, eventually returning to comics in the 1960s with work for ACG on Unknown Worlds. He contributed to Warren Publishing in the 1970s under the pseudonym Jay Taycee. At Marvel, he inked Iron Man and other titles.
