Joseph A. Palaia (born February 3, 1927) is a graduate of New Jersey's Rider University and has been in the New Jersey Senate since 1989. Before entering the Senate, Senator Palaia served in a variety of different state and local elected offices. He served on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders from 1979 to 1981 and was on Ocean Township Council from 1967 to 1971 until he ran for Mayor in 1971. Sen. Palaia served as Ocean's Mayor until 1979. In 1982 Joseph moved to the New Jersey General Assembly until 1989, and in 1984 he served as Assistant Minority Whip.
