He was born in Liège, Belgium. Despite being sponsored by the king, he was not accepted at the Paris Conservatoire. He became a private pupil of Rodolphe Kreutzer. He was accepted as a Professeur at the Paris Conservatoire in 1843, where he subsequently taught for 47 years.
He performed Beethoven's Kreutzer sonata with Liszt.
Among his students were Fritz Kreisler, Eugène Ysaÿe, and Henryk Wieniawski.
But this did not impede the success of Greuze or diminish his renown.
His paintings, engraved by Flipart, Massart, Gaillard, and Levasseur, continued to be most popular, and brought him a fortune.
Meanwhile, although it was customary for artists admitted by the Academy as associates to present a picture to the Society within six months, ten years had passed, and Greuze had not fulfilled this obligation.
